Winners announced for the Get Berkshire Active Awards

The winners of the Get Berkshire Active Awards have been announced at the ceremony hosted by Sport Presenter Tim Dellor at the Hilton Hotel, Reading on Friday 23rd February 2018.

350 sport enthusiasts assembled together at the awards ceremony which reflected on a fantastic year of sport and physical activity in Berkshire. The event saw 12 people, organisation and clubs receive awards and local Olympic Skeet Shooter Amber Hill enthused guests with her inspirational after-dinner speech.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Table Tennis Coach, Ken Phillips. Ken is chairman of Cippenham Table Tennis Club and has been on the committee since 1983, and has helped dozens of players to develop to an international standard.

Youth Engagement Project of the Year was awarded to Sand Martins Golf Club for their Feel Inspired Golf Academy. The project breaks down barriers and brings sport to young people with special needs, creating healthy habits for life.

Albatross Diving Club picked up the Team Performance of the Year Award for their outstanding performances at national events over the last year – picking up numerous medals and some divers qualifying to represent GB.

The Community Club of the Year was decided by a public vote and Reading Lions Handball Club picked up the trophy after seeing huge club growth and an increase in outreach work over the last 12 months.

Thames Valley Kings Wheelchair Basketball Club Coach, Grant Barker, picked up the Coach of the Year Award. Grant coaches wheelchair basketball to both adults and children, and led the Tornado Kings U15s to Gold at the South East Junior Championships.

Volunteer of the Year was presented to Sue Bennett for her voluntary work as Run Leader for West Berkshire. Despite her very busy job as a nurse, Sue invests a lot of her time in the running group and has supported the runners to become physically and mentally stronger.

Maidenhead Utd FC and Stand Out for Autism were awarded with the Health Project of the Year award for their soccer school which opened for children on the autistic spectrum.

The Workplace of the Year Award went to the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service who prioritise health and wellbeing at the core of the 18 fire stations across Berkshire.

The Active Primary School and Active Secondary School awards recognised schools that create an active culture for its students and staff, and were decided by public vote via the Get Berkshire Active website. Active Primary School was presented to Priory School and St Barts were awarded the Active Secondary School Award for the second year running.

The Junior Sports Personality of the Year Award was awarded to talented gymnast William Cowen, whose outstanding achievements over the last 12 months include becoming National Champion for the fourth time and the first British Gymnast to ever achieve three World Titles in a Row.

Cyclist Rachael Elliott picked up the Sports Personality of the Year award after winning over 30 events in 2017, achieving a silver medal in the UK 25 mile time trial championship and setting a UK national record for cycling 30 miles. Rachael is also heavily involved in promoting female participation in cycling and organises female-only group bike rides.

This challenge is made easier by the hard work and dedication of many people across Berkshire and these awards is an opportunity to reward their commitment.”
