Last year, a challenging time for the whole world and our county, the GBA Awards recognised the fantastic contribution of local individuals and organisations to the mental and physical wellbeing of Berkshire residents. The 'Berkshire physical activity lockdown hero', a campaign celebrating the 9th GBA Awards' winners on BBC Radio Berkshire and social media, united residents, communities and activity providers around the joy and importance of physical activity and helped keep spirits high in the county during the winter lockdown.
This year, as we are recovering from the pandemic, the 10th GBA Awards will continue recognising individuals and organisations that contributed to a healthier and more resilient Berkshire. There is one award category – the 'Berkshire physical activity hero'.
Mindset Massage
Mindset Massage, led by Mandy and Debbie, has a mission to create environments where people of all ages and abilities feel rejuvenated, engaged and driven, by providing a seated exercise pathway to a positive mindset and physical and mental wellbeing. Their classes were brought online during lockdown to continue to support those who need it most from 11yrs old – almost 100. Their work with those suffering long term health conditions and disabilities has allowed the community to feel a sense of belonging, while regaining confidence. They also reached out to members over the phone to provide the extra one to one support, checking in with those deemed high risk.
"I joined the class as I have fibromyalgia, diabetes, neuropathy and a few other things that cause me pain and fatigue, and I am pleased to say that taking part in these classes has helped my with my co-ordination and balance, enabling me to stand for a little longer. Having been unable to stand and cook a meal for a long time I was able to achieve that a couple of weeks ago. I was also able to access the steps to my patio, without having to walk right around the garden to get there." – Mary, member of Mindset Massage
