Last year, a challenging time for the whole world and our county, the GBA Awards recognised the fantastic contribution of local individuals and organisations to the mental and physical wellbeing of Berkshire residents. The 'Berkshire physical activity lockdown hero', a campaign celebrating the 9th GBA Awards' winners on BBC Radio Berkshire and social media, united residents, communities and activity providers around the joy and importance of physical activity and helped keep spirits high in the county during the winter lockdown.
This year, as we are recovering from the pandemic, the 10th GBA Awards will continue recognising individuals and organisations that contributed to a healthier and more resilient Berkshire. There is one award category – the 'Berkshire physical activity hero'.
Anisha Gangotra
From January 2021 to the end of November 2021, Anisha ran 6 x 6 week Zoom programmes for members of the Windsor and Maidenhead Community Forum, who have never participated in an exercise programme. All attendees were aged 50+ and members of one of the major religions within WAMCF - Hinduism, Sikhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Baha'i Faith, Buddhism, Brahma Kumaris and Humanism.
Anisha ran these sessions despite suffering her own challenging health issues having lived with ulcerative colitis since 2008, as well as mental health issues including PTSD, depression and anxiety following a life-changing event. She uses her breadth of professional and personal experience to work with multiple stakeholders to challenge society's views of those living with health conditions, improve infrastructure and shape the future towards person-centred healthcare by the people who use it.
'The Joy of Movement classes are one of the highlights of my week. Anisha's delightful and inspirational classes shed a ray of light on an otherwise lonely lockdown, since I lost my husband to Covid last year. I always feel exhilarated after the Tuesday evening sessions and ready to face my world again, such as it is.' – A participant
Anisha said: "I love teaching dance and supporting people to get moving to the beat! I teach a variety of dance classes both standing and seated, encouraging everyone to get involved, including older adults and people with disabilities, long-term health conditions and mental health issues. We take a tour of the world through music and dance and it's supported us to stay connected and reduce isolation during these challenging times. I'm so excited to receive the Get Berkshire Active Physical Activity Hero Award! Thank you!"
