Last year, a challenging time for the whole world and our county, the GBA Awards recognised the fantastic contribution of local individuals and organisations to the mental and physical wellbeing of Berkshire residents. The 'Berkshire physical activity lockdown hero', a campaign celebrating the 9th GBA Awards' winners on BBC Radio Berkshire and social media, united residents, communities and activity providers around the joy and importance of physical activity and helped keep spirits high in the county during the winter lockdown.
This year, as we are recovering from the pandemic, the 10th GBA Awards will continue recognising individuals and organisations that contributed to a healthier and more resilient Berkshire. There is one award category – the 'Berkshire physical activity hero'.
Angela Carr
Angela created a gymnastics club for children in Slough and works voluntarily ensuring every child, no matter their situation, is given the opportunity to join in. She created a sports holiday club within lockdown which tackles obesity and offers free spaces and food to those children in need. She also worked with social services to help give every child who needs a confidence boost, mental and physical health management support.
During lockdown she set up zoom workouts to keep all children active over the programme and would check in with parents to help get food and supplies. She has delivered sport to young offenders, children struggling with mental health, children on free school meals, children with behaviour issues and those with SEN.
She created a young leadership team, engaging children who feel they are less academic into the world of teaching, creating and advancing skills. When sports were allowed to go ahead Angela made sure those who were nervous about returning to big sporting events had the opportunity to work in an outside environment, cutting down the amount of people in a session and encouraging 1:1 training
"All in all, Angela inspires me every day to work harder, get more age groups involved in sport, bring a sense of community back and all help each other achieve our goals." – Morgan Todd.
