Disability Sport

What is Disability Sport?

Disability / Inclusive Sport is an important element of the work of Get Berkshire Active ensuring that people with physical, sensory and learning difficulties have equal access to sport and physical activity across Berkshire. In order to achieve our aims we work with a wide range of partners including National Governing Bodies of Sport (NGB's), Local Authorities, School Sports Networks local disability groups.

As part of our Disability / Inclusive Sport work we

Lead

Bring partners together to provide guidance to help our partners deliver sessions which meet the needs of people with disabilities. Examples of this include our regular Sport & Physical Activity Network (SPAN) meetings and conferences.

Support

Provide funding which gives more and better opportunities for people with disabilities SC link

Provide training opportunities that upskill the Berkshire workforce, improving inclusive practice.

Deliver

Deliver Ever Active in Reading and West Berkshire.These are physical activity sessions that support older adults (50 + in Reading) and adults in West Berkshire who are seeking to improve their health and fitness and reduce feelings of loneliness and social isolation

Deliver Building Better Opportunities. Building Better Opportunities is a project that we work on with partners in East Berkshire that aims to improve the long term prospects of individuals with multiple disadvantages by reducing barriers that prevent them from entering and sustaining employment. Disabled people are one of the target audiences for Building Better Opportunities

Facts and Figures

According to Activity Alliance data, disabled people are twice as likely to be physically inactive (43 per cent) than non-disabled people (21 per cent).
