What is Mums' Zone?

Mums' Zone was inspired by a mum who found parenthood a real challenge in so many ways and didn't feel there was much available focusing on us mums! She wanted to provide a safe place where mums could meet weekly for 2 hours, do some light exercise and have another hour to relax, have some healthy refreshments and listen to experts in health and wellbeing on a range of topics.

Mums' Zone is a health and wellbeing opportunity for any mums with babies. We want Mums' Zone to provide local mums with an opportunity to do something for themselves by taking part in some light yoga/breathing/stretching/relaxing and receiving a range of health and wellbeing advice – and more importantly an opportunity to meet and chat to other local mums!

Who is it for?

Any mum with a baby who is not walking. Due to health and safety we cannot accept babies who are walking or confident crawlers. You cannot bring any other children with you that are walkers.

You must have had your 6-week postnatal check (and received an ok to start exercising from your GP.

How much is it?

£2 per week. Please pay cash at the venues when you arrive.

What do I need to bring?

You just need comfortable clothing for the light yoga (trainers not needed as you will be barefoot). And water (can this be provided if people forget it). A blanket for your baby to lie on and anything else you think baby will need in that two hours.

Will I be able to feed and change my baby at the session?

Of course! It's not a problem at all if you have to stop during the session to feed, change or comfort your baby. The childrens centres are well equipped with different rooms and changing facilities.

Mums Zone Ambassadors

There will hopefully be one Mums Zone ambassador (volunteer) at each of the sessions. They are there for you mums as a welcoming face as well as for any support, to help with your babies if you want during the yoga class, to help with any registration forms, enquiries and to talk to about your Mums Zone experience. We want to capture your thoughts and experiences over the months you take part in Mums Zone so we can help to improve things and hopefully to build the case for more funding to run more Mums Zone sessions beyond 2020!

If not exercised for a VERY long time, does not matter?

Not at all, the yoga is perfect for complete beginners and there's no expectation for you to be any particular level of fitness or ability.

2 hours is quite a long time, my baby is likely to need a nap/feed/cuddle/nappy change etc in that time, does that matter? Or does it matter if I have to leave in that time?

We realise that newborn babies need their mum A LOT so if you have to stop at any point to attend to your baby that is absolutely fine.

I’m breastfeeding and therefore lying on my front can be uncomfortable, does this mean I can’t take part?

The exercises will be adapted to suit new, including breastfeeding, mums. Similarly, due to the high levels of prolactin you will still have in your bodies the movements will be adapted to accommodate this.

The thought of exercising because…… I’m sleep deprived/worried about what my body looks like/I don’t feel like I should do something for myself/I haven’t exercised in years/my newborn doesn’t like being put down…..is at the bottom of my priority list….should I still come along?

Absolutely YES!! Whilst we'd encourage you to take part, even if you only end up watching we'd still love to have you come along. Remember, other Mums will be in exactly the same position. And if you need to feed/change/cuddle baby that's absolutely fine. Wear comfortable clothing….and we'll wake you up if you fall asleep on the Yoga mat.

Is there parking?

There is parking at all venues APART FROM MONKSFIELD WAY where you can find off road free parking.

Can I leave my buggy at the venue?

Yes there are spaces outside and some indoor space at some venues. If you are concerned about your buggy you can consider buying a lock for it.

How long does Mums’ Zone run for?

Mums' Zone will run till the end of March 2020.

Is there a waiting list?

If we receive more interest than spaces then we will hold a waiting list. Each Mum can take part for 12 sessions after which a new mum will be offered the space.

It doesn’t matter if:

  • Baby cries and needs a cuddle/feed/nappy change
  • You have to leave during the session
  • You haven't exercised for a long time
  • You think you're overweight/the wrong shape/too unfit
  • You have a health condition or disability which is not made worse by exercise
  • The thought of exercising is scary!

We still want you to come along! We understand being a mum is really hard and babies need their Mum A LOT but we hope this session will feature at least a little 'me time' for you, plus an opportunity to talk to other Mum's having the same apprehensions, challenges and sleep deprived nights as you.

There will be registration forms to complete

It is important that we collect information from you for registration and health and wellbeing. We want to track the improvements in mums health and wellbeing through this programme in order for us to apply for further funding to be able to continue beyond 2020. We therefore really appreciate your time in completing the paperwork but if you do not wish to complete the paperwork just let us know.

Throughout the project, all details and personal information collected about you will be stored securely by Get Berkshire Active. Only the project team and the people directly involved in this project will have access to the information you provide.
