Recent events around the world and here at home have thrown, yet again, a spotlight on two issues: racism and female safety. As an organisation, Get Berkshire
Active are passionate about fairness and equitable provision of sport and physical activity. We want it make it clear in our words and actions that we support an
anti-racist agenda and an agenda that recognises and promotes issues around female safety. There are enough barriers already in the way of people playing sport and
leading a physically active lifestyle; racism and worry about safety should not be part of this.
Please see our statement on anti-racism here and female safety
here.

Women in Sport: latest research on teenage girls
The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Teenage Girls’ Lives and Physical Activity
|
Women in Sport have released findings on their research into the impact of the pandemic on teenage girls and their relationship with sport and physical activity.
They found that 62% of girls were doing less activity than before the pandemic with many finding it hard to motivate themselves in the absence of normal activities.
However, some girls that were previously considered less active have been on a positive journey; 26% of them said they are more active than before and 22% are
fitter. Girls were initially drawn to online physical activity classes but this didn't last and 63% found it hard to stay motivated online as activities were too
intense, serious or repetitive.
Overall girls recognised the benefit of physical activity:
•
|
52% agreed that keeping fit and doing physical activity was more important than ever
|
•
|
55% said they felt being physically active made them happier
|
•
|
54% said that it made them less stressed
|
Positively, 82% of girls said they will put more effort into being active when life returns to normal but half were concerned they had lost their fitness and 41% had
lost confidence in their sporting ability.

Sport website to find out more and to access the whole report.

|
When asked about their children's activity levels, almost 4 in 5 parents (79%) reported that their children were currently doing less than 60 minutes
every day. Three in five (60%) say their children are active, but for 30 minutes or less. A further 11% say their children are currently doing no

Energise Me research
|
Energise Me (Active Partnership for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight) commissioned The Behavioural Architects to help them understand the views of vulnerable
14-19-year-olds in the county. They set out to learn how teenagers feel about physical activity. They were curious about what motivates them to do things and what
stops them.
When it comes to physical activity, it turns out there are all kinds of barriers preventing teenagers from being more active.
