We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Community Development lead to support our Place focussed community programme. This is a physical activity programme with a difference - looking at the upstream problems and barriers that stop people from being active. Working with partners in the public, private and third sector we will look to change the policies, processes, plans and decisions that organisations take to address these barriers.

We will collaborate across all sectors, locally and nationally, using our skills, knowledge and resource to ensure equitable provision and participation in physical activity to address wider social outcomes and inequalities.

We work closely with Sport England to provide leadership, strategic direction and support to a wide range of organisations involved in physical activity. We deliver through partnership working and this role will report to a local steering group of community partners.

Your Role

  • You will lead on the implementation of significant, focussed investment into Britwell in Slough. The aim of this work is to identify and tackle the underlying causes of inactivity.
  • We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with experience of working on system change initiatives.
  • You may have a background in health, community development, regeneration or physical activity.

Role Outcomes

1. Improve wellbeing outcomes for families as part of place development work through effective programme delivery.

2. Create a connected, vibrant, proactive system of partners working in priority place (Slough – Britwell ward) to overcome systemic barriers to physical activity.

3. Grassroots, community organisations and the community are part of Decision Making.

4. Robust learning and evaluation framework in place, including a theory of change, impact measures related to system change and the local community.

5. System leadership knowledge and skills are developed within relevant strategic partners.

6. Coordinated, coherent approach has been developed to place based working.

What You Will Do

You will have autonomy in how to achieve the role outcomes and in delivering an effective project plan, working alongside GBA's core team and local stakeholders. Key tasks will include:

  • Co-ordinate, convene and support local partners working on place expansion.
  • Collate and analyse feedback, insight, and evidence to support effective decision making.
  • Develop strong relationships with all partners involved in place work.
  • Support local engagement and delivery colleagues to develop approaches to community engagement and co-production.
  • Develop programme plan for initial (Discovery) phase of place expansion in Britwell. Eventually build and own the full programme plan (in the next phase of funding).
  • Develop training offer and skill development opportunities for partners, utilizing content already created by Sport England / others. Including system leadership, asset-based community development and psychologically informed environments.
  • Supporting development of the governance structure for the work and ensuring the right people are involved in different aspects of the work.
  • Lead the development of a theory of change (ToC) for the area, alongside an evaluation and learning approach for the programme. (ToC training will be provided)
  • Lead the programme to identify and tackle the underlying causes of physical inactivity and apply system change concepts to achieve this aim.
  • Providing reporting information and performance updates to the steering group.
  • Manage sub-contracts and commissioned work.

Experience and Skills

  • Qualification in an appropriate discipline such as Community Development or System Change or Sports Development.
  • Experience of strategic planning or system change or partnership strategy development.
  • Experience of charitable funding.
  • Track record of having a collaborative approach to project management and hitting/exceeding targets.
  • Performance management, motivation and development of teams and individuals.
  • Experience of IT applications – databases, word processing, apps, website etc.
  • Ability to forge strong relationships with a range of internal and external colleagues and organisations.
  • Understanding of System Change principles or change management techniques or complex problem solving.
  • Ability to identify areas for improvement and implement continuous improvement.
  • Strategic communication planning, including social media .
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate, enthuse, persuade, negotiate and influence in the spoken and written word.
  • Experience of public speaking/delivery of information in a variety of settings to a wide range of groups and individuals.
  • Good organisation skills and a methodical approach to work.
  • Budgeting / Cash Flow / Project Finance skills.
  • Intellectually robust with the ability to think and act clearly and strategically.
  • Experience of collecting, disseminating and applying insight to improve practice.

Additional

  • Location: Based in Britwell, Slough at least 3 days per week, optional 2 days from home. Travel to Bisham Abbey and other partner sites as required.
