How Sharon Found New Strength and Confidence Through the GBA Reconditioning Programme
After facing significant challenges following a leg amputation in 2022, the Get Berkshire Active Reconditioning programme has provided Sharon with a renewed sense of purpose, strength and well-being.
Before joining the programme, Sharon spent most days at home, struggling with pain and adapting to life with a prosthetic leg. She said: "I would spend most of my days sat at home yearning for the life I had before my leg amputation and wondering if I would ever live a happy, fulfilling life again."
The pain and lack of confidence led to a cycle of inactivity and low self-esteem. She explained: "The pain was too much sometimes, so it was just easier for me to stay at home, causing me to put on weight and feel less confident. I needed help to boost my confidence and feel better in my body and mind."
Referred by Social Prescriber Anna, Sharon began a three-month journey with Active Ageing Officer, Kate Wiggins, from Get Berkshire Active. The programme focused on improving strength and confidence through personalized in-home coaching sessions and a series of strength and balance exercises. She said: "The Reconditioning Programme did just that and is without doubt the best thing I've ever done as it has positively changed my life mentally and physically."
One of the most remarkable outcomes was Sharon's newfound enthusiasm for fitness. "Kate has miraculously managed to convince me to join my local Better GLL Gym, something I thought I would never enjoy again, and which I now attend regularly," she revealed. This regular gym attendance has become a cornerstone of her routine, contributing to her overall health and happiness.
The positive impact of the Reconditioning Programme has inspired Sharon to recommend it to others and even consider a future career as a personal trainer. She said: "I have recommended this Programme to three people already and it has inspired me not to give up on life. Maybe one day I can be more involved in some way as the Reconditioning Programme has inspired me to become a PT and use what happened to me to make positive change for others. Kate is one of the nicest and patient people I ever met who really wants her clients to succeed and James from the gym is so understanding and genuine. Great Programme. This could help the NHS more than they know."
